Vola Stevens - Assistant Director of registration has had a fall and broken her ankle. Word is that she will be having surgery on May 21,2009. As more details become available I will get them posted. I'm sure she could use some prayers and well wishes

Update: 5/27/09 From Bette Williamson
Vola is currently in Covenant Village in Grand Rapids for rehab following surgery to repair her broken ankle. She will be there 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the progress she makes with therapy. She will be unable to bear weight on that leg for 6 to 8 weeks, so this will be a long process for her - she is only 4 miles from home, so that helps. Thanks to all for cards and especially Prayers. Bette
Update: 6/1/09 From Bette Williamson and Steve Farr
Talked to Bette last night, Vola is in the rehabilitation center and has started the rehab. She is a little weak but trying had to nurse the ankle back slowly. Depending of the progress she will be in about another 4 - 6 weeks. Surgery put 2 screws inside and a plate outside her ankle as three of the smaller ankle bones were broken. Sure that she could use lots of prayers and well wishes to get her quickly on the mend.
Update: 6/30/09 From Bette Williamson and Steve Farr
Talked to Bette again last night and Vola had seen her Doctor today and her bones are healing. She is still at Covenant Village and currently has plans to come home on July 9th. Several Chapter 55 members (Roger Hanson & Ron Clapp) have made some new ramps to help her in the rises to the main house. She is using a walker for the short trips, but will probably use a wheelchair for a while at home. So the Prayers and Well Wishes are working so keep them coming.

Update on Vola Stevens- From Steven Farr - Assistant State Director Safety on 10/1/09
Vola started radiation treatments on 09/22/09 and will continue every day - Monday thru Friday until Nov 9, 2009. These treatments only take 15 minutes but that is a drive from home and back everyday and it just wears her out Bette says. keep the cards and prayers coming as she is trying to heal her ankle and withstand the radiation treatments. For a lady that just turned 90 years old that's a lot to take at one time. Good Luck Vola!

Asst Director of Youth's, Susan Halhober was admitted to Mercy Hospital in Monroe this afternoon. She was having a knee problem for over a week and the doctor was treating her for a strain. X-Rays and MRI showed nothing. He sent her to a specialist today who found an infection in her knee and leg muscles. At the hospital her sugar was found to be over 400 so she has been placed in ICU. She could use some good prayers and cards. They can be sent to:

Update on Susan - From Joe Halhober - Michigan State Director on 9/04/09 3:38 pm
They moved her out of ICU at 3 PM to a regular room. Her sugar is down to normal but may have to be put on insulin. The fever broke and her temp has gone back to normal. They are still giving her two antibiotics and will keep her in the hospital till at least Tuesday. She in Mercy Memorial Hospital in Monroe on the forth floor room 418. The bad news is the doctor says 6 to 8 weeks to fully recover so keep the prayers going for a speedy recovery. TC does not like hospitals so he's a little scared to go up to see his mom.

Update on Susan - From Joe Halhober - Michigan State Director on 9/06/09 12:22 pm
Susan still in the hospital and plans another MRI, third one since she been in there. She is feeling better, but the antibiotics are making her sick to her stomach. Sugar still acting up, but can see that with the food they bring her and the fact they won't let her get up and move around. Still looks like she'll be home on Tuesday, but daily returns to the hospital for antibiotics treatments for a few weeks. T.C.'s father refused to take him for the weekend as we figured he would, so we've been going fishing down to Lake Erie to keep him occupied. He's real good at feeding the fish his worms.

Update on Susan - From Joe Halhober - Michigan State Director on 9/08/09 3:20 pm
We just left the hospital. According to her doctor the infection is clearing up but the local hospital can not do the MRI on her hip that he wants. So it appears now that she will be transferred to Toledo later this week. She developed a intestinal back up over the weekend so now they have to get that cleared up before they can send her to Toledo. Doctor thinks it may be up to another week in the hospital. It looks like this has made her a type 2 diabetic. She needs all the prayers for a full recovery.

Update on Susan - From Joe Halhober - Michigan State Director on 9/22/09 4:12 pm
She is now in Henry Ford Hospital Detroit, transferred from Mercy in Monroe while we were at the Samboree, so the drive is the pits. She has a small incising made on her right leg above her knee which they are keeping open for now because of the infection. The doctor may have to go into her knee tomorrow for fluid. Today for the first time in a week she got out of bed and sat in a chair for a while. She will more than likely be another week in the hospital and a week in rehab before she can come home. She says "HI" and the card from the Samboree was great! Keep her in your prayers.

Update on Susan - From Joe Halhober - Michigan State Director on 10/1/09 4:12 pm
We had to go to Henry Ford Hospital to pick her up at rush hour. As of right now she is sitting in a chair in the living room. Glad to be home but she is still a long way from being able to go back to work. She can not put any pressure on her leg and has 6 weeks of Anti- Bio to take. She will also be on insulin now. Please keep the prays up for a full recovery.

Update on Susan - From Joe Halhober - Michigan State Director on 10/12/09 7:54 pm
Evening,
Susan had a follow up with her surgeon today. He removed the drain tubes from her leg and was quit surprised with her recovery so far. She was able to go down the steps with crutches, but had to go back up in the wheel chair. She has his OK to start putting pressure on the leg. She has her sugar under control and diets are planned as soon as she gets up and back to work. Will still have anti-bio twice a day by IV with blood test every couple of day until the test shows the infection has left her system. She thanks everyone for the cards and prayers. She still a few weeks from going back to work.

Update on Susan - From Joe Halhober - Michigan State Director on 10/31/09 9:35 pm
Susan is doing much better, took her for grocery yesterday and stayed clean of her and the cart she was trying to drive straight. I have to take her up to Henry Ford Hospital on Monday for an 830AM appointment with her blood doctor so they can remove the pic from her arm. She is doing exercises and the visiting nurses say she is healing up real good. She's still more than a month away from going back to work.

Good morning folks. I have some bad news for you.
Harley Thompson died, I am certain you did not know him, however he was a member of Good Sam and had been for years. He was a past wagon master of Chapter 68, Port City Sams in Muskegon. Harley was wagon master in 1989 and I am not sure for how many years. They live in Fruitport, Michigan
He is survived by his wife, Adeline and 4 children. I would appreciate it if you would add his name to the Cross of Roses Ceremony.

Just when things started to get back to near normal around here with Susan at least able to get around with a walker, Cheryl got pains that doubled her over last night and I took her to the emergency room at midnight. After several tests they have decided she has a bowel obstruction and they admitted her at 4 AM this morning. The plan now is to do a colonoscopy tomorrow and, if possible remove whatever is causing the blockage without doing surgery. We need prayers and cards for her now. Will let you know how things go. She's in Merecy Hospital in Monroe on the second floor, room 241 and the phone # 734-240-4602. Cards and prayers can also be sent to:

Just got a chance to sit down so they did not do the scope today since they are having trouble getting things cleaned out. They doubled her dose of junk to drink from 2 liters last night to 4 tonight. I am not going to help her drink that stuff it's terrible even with flavoring. The plan is to go for it tomorrow at 4:30 PM. So between Susan and her I'll be busy. She is feeling a little better and the cramps have eased some what. We're praying all goes well tomorrow and they can get thinks cleaned out.

They finally tonight got her down for the scope. She has a small mass in her abdomen that the doctor wants to remove in the next 48 hours. We'll be meeting with the doctors in the morning and will give you a better update when we know more. So from what I understand as of tonight they want to do surgery in the next day or two. I want to thank MaryLou, Carol, and Gloria Lynn for calling Cheryl, they have made her feel better.

After a couple of days of confusion, they have done the scope, biopisy (results not back yet) and lower GI series. She has a mass blocking 90% of a foot long section of her intestine. She could possibly have surgery as early as tomorrow but we don't expect anything till at least Monday. She sure has enjoyed the calls from you. Please keep the prayers and cards coming for her. Her phone number is 734-240-4602.
Message from Joe Halhober - Michigan State Director on 10/31/2009 at 1:35 pm
Doctor's are planning on doing Cheryl's surgery on Tuesday, Nov 2 to remove approximately a 1 foot section of intestine that has about 90% blockage from a mass. Biopisy results have not came back in yet so cancer is not ruled out, so please keep the prayers coming in. After surgery she will need to in the hospital for approximately 1 week barring any problems from surgery. Still on a liquid diet so has not to create another blockage and pospone surgery. Thanks for the calls to Cheryl as they are easing her mind quite a bit. Thanks again

Evening Everyone, Cheryl's surgery was scheduled for 10 AM but they did not get started till 11:15 AM. At 1 PM still going so had to leave the hospital to take T.C. and Susan over for T.C. doctors appointment. Dropped them off next to hospital and back to waiting room. RN's were great. At 2 PM had to go back to pick up Susan and T.C. and was told that they were just closing the surgery and would be at least another hour. So took T.C, and Susan by to pick up their medications and home (T.C. has touch of flu). Back to hospital at 3 PM just in time to talk with Cheryl's worn out surgeon. She had to remove approx. 2 feet of her bowels and cancer was present. She also had to take several bioseys of the surrounding area so they can check for the spread of any cancer and will not know if chemo is need until Friday when those biopsies come back.
She is in the ICU for next 48 hours since the surgery was so long and extensive as a precaution. I did talk to her for a little bit, but she was in a lot of pain. Talked with her nurse and we decided she needs her rest tonight and left for home. On the only good note T.C. is back to normal tonight. The phone number listed above is no good any more since most likely they will put her in a different room when they move her from ICU. Need your prayers and well wishes, and will keep this site updated as more information becomes available.
